200 PS3s Clustered to Impersonate eCommerce Websites

ps3machines Wired.com has an interesting article about how a research firm is using 200 PlayStation 3s, in a large cluster, to create fake security certificates that allow them to pass off as legit eCommerce websites like Amazon.com

“We can impersonate Amazon.com and you won’t notice,” says David Molnar, a computer science PhD candidate at UC Berkeley. “The padlock will be there and everything will look like it’s a perfectly ordinary certificate.”

The article goes way into detail about how the PS3s Cell helps in cracking the key for the certificate used for these sites. It’s an interesting read if Crypto is your thing.

This also remind me of an article I read early in 2008 about the US Military using 300 PlayStation 3s for some unspecified research as well.
