Windows Live to go Social

Very soon Microsoft’s live.com will be getting a major upgrade.  In an effort to compete with massive social sites like Facebook and MySpace, Microsoft will be integrating most, if not all, of its services into a unified site.  You can read about the details on Microsoft’s site as well as the story on TechCrunch.

There’s a lot going on with this transition but if Michael Arrington (TechCrunch) is making comments like:

The result is an impressive personal productivity suite that makes me almost wish I wasn’t solely a Mac user.

…the move on Microsoft’s part cannot be bad.

At the core of this is an incredible opportunity for Microsoft to gather 238 million worldwide Messenger users into one social site all at once.  That’s very impressive given that Facebook currently stands at only 100 million users.  The question remains of course will people transition.  I suspect there won’t be a mass exodus from Facebook but overtime people will migrate to the site that incorporates their primary instant messaging application, in this case Messenger.

My hat is off to you Microsoft.  Incredibly strategic move.
